The beautiful game
Sorry for the lack of posts over the last little while...but the summer has a tendency to do that.
I will do a recap of all the summer's sports events in a little while...but here is a little update on my pursuit for the summer.
------------------
When I open my eyes in the morning I find myself searching, yearning in my pursuit for perfection. I search for it with my mind wide open and my beliefs unwavering that one day I will get to this my holy grail. I am a warrior who seeks to find my weapon to bring my opponent to my knees.
Yes I wake up every morning and picture that my pursuit might finally be completed. I am a weekend golfer forever stuck in the doldrums of mediocrity…Playing a little better than perhaps the average golfer but always seeking to get better.
Every round I play I set a target for myself and I can know as soon as I hit the first shot whether or not I will be able to come close to reaching that target…
Well welcome to my most recent round …I step up to the tee on the first hole and I took out the one club that is usually my nemesis. The most expensive club in my bag, my driver, one the hole I really had no choice it was a par 5 and with my length going for it in two is almost always an option. So on a relatively narrow par 5 with bunkers put right where I could potentially fly the ball.
Count me as one of those that was mildly shocked when the ball landed right where I aimed it about 205 yards away from the green. At that moment I knew I was going to have an opportunity to reach the goal that I had been looking to do for the last couple of years. Even though I missed my approach shot badly I managed to make my par….and it all progressed from there.
I played the round of my life where even my misses were missed to the right place and more often than not I was on the right end of a lucky break. Coming to the last hole I needed a par on a par 5 in order to break 80…having succumbed to nerves a little bit playing the two previous holes 3 over. I hit a bad drive a little bit left towards the water and into some trees. Here I was able to get my most fortunate break of the day…the ball dropped down into the rough where I had a good lie and no hindrance to my swing and was able to advance the ball to 150 yards out.
From there I knew all I had to do was put it on the green at a decent distance I could two putt for 79 no problem. So I put it at the farthest point on the green from the hole and was left with a monster 2 putt for par and a 79. I hit a perfect first putt but it didn’t break as far as I thought it would and it left me with a 5 foot knee-knocker to get my 79. My putting has been a struggle over the last little while but I managed to put it home after it did a little around the world on the cup. It was an extremely gratifying moment….
But as with any golfer…the next step is to set a new target….So here’s the plan for my next round…shoot 75…..We’ll see if I can’t get it done before the short northern summer is done.
